`Sri Lanka issue failed in TamilNadu Lok Sabha elections 2009

New Delhi:
DMKleader Dayanidhi Maran said on Saturday that the victory of his partyin the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu showed that the Sri Lankanissue had failed to sway voters in the state.

Asthe DMK proved pollsters wrong with a strong performance in a majorityof Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha seats, Maran told NDTV TV: 'People (ofTamil Nadu) have given a clear mandate.'

Askedif the emotive issue of Sri Lanka's military offensive against theTamil Tigers had played a role in balloting, as many had expected, hesaid: 'That has not played a role.'

AIADMKleader J. Jayalalithaa and her allies in the MDMK and PMK had taken anaggressive line in Tamil Nadu during the election campaign blaming theSri Lankan and Indian governments for the suffering of Tamil civiliansin the island nation.


Jayalalithaathreatened to send the Indian Army to Sri Lanka to carve out a TamilEelam state if her coalition won most seats in Tamil Nadu and if sheended up playing a key role in government formation in New Delhi.
