Anil Ambani group alleges murder conspiracy, chopper sabotage

Fri, Apr 24 11:46 PM

Mumbai, April 24 (IANS) The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group has alleged a 'conspiracy' by 'possible business rivals' to murder company chairman Anil Ambani after pebbles and gravel were found in the gear box of his helicopter and demanded a probe into the 'sabotage'. The Mumbai police Crime Branch Friday evening decided to take over the investigations.

The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group wrote a strongly-worded letter to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, alleging 'a conspiracy to murder' its chairman Anil Ambani and demanding a thorough probe into the incident.

Announcing that the Mumbai Crime Branch was taking over the probe, Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria told reporters late Friday evening: 'We have asked the local police to transfer the case to us and we shall carry out further investigations into the matter.'

The police plan to set up a special probe team to inquire into the incident which has sent shockwaves in business and aviation circles.

Air Works India Engineering Pvt Ltd, which was engaged in maintaining the 13-seater, twin-engined Bell 412 helicopter (No. VT-RCL) since October 2006, has put off duty its entire maintenance engineering staff of 52 for at least one day, or till the police probe into the incident is completed, a company spokesman said.

'We are fully co-operating with the investigators and we felt that till the probe is over, none of our engineers should be present or hamper the investigations in any manner,' the spokesman told IANS here tonight.

In the letter addressed to Chavan, Capt. R.N. Joshi, senior pilot with Reliance Transport & Travels Pvt Ltd, giving a detailed account of the incident, said: 'The planned manner in which the pebbles and gravel were put in the filler cap, at a height of 10 feet above the ground in the gear box, and the gear box cap was closed thereafter, clearly shows that some persons and possible business rivals were attempting to take away the life of Anil Ambani. This is clearly an attempt to murder.'

The letter adds that this would not have been possible without the active involvement of Air Works technicians and the operation was carried out with expert help. Only 13 Air Works technicians - whose names are given in the letter - had access to the helicopter, Capt Joshi added.

Though the Santacruz Airport police station, where Air Works lodged a complaint at 5.30 p.m. Thursday, has detained four and questioned several other Air Works employees in connection with the incident, there is no further progress in the incident, a police official said.

'We are still investigating the matter and questioning several of the persons concerned with the helicopter maintenance. Only after we get proper evidence, we shall initiate appropriate proceedings, including arresting them,' Senior Inspector S.M. Ghuge of Santacruz Airport Police Station said.

Capt Joshi's letter also mentioned that the chopper was being prepared for a scheduled flight to take Anil Ambani and nine other top officials of Reliance Infocomm from Mahalaxmi Race Course (south Mumbai) to Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) in Navi Mumbai, a 20-minute flight, Friday morning.

Keeping the possibilities in view, the police have registered the Air Works complaint invoking Sec. 440 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with 'a mischievous intent to murder'.

அனாந்த ரங்கம் பிள்ளையன் டயரி குறிப்புகள் -படிக்கவேண்டிய வரலாற்று பதிவு

ANANDARANGAPPILLAI V-NATKKURIPPU — Angirasa Aandu 1752-53 (Tamil): Orsay M. Gopalakichanane; Natramizh Pathippagam, M-55/12, MIG Flats, I Avenue Extension, Indira Nagar, Adyar, Chennai-600020. Rs. 230.

Anandarangam Pillai's diaries written in the mid-18th century constitute a very important landmark in Tamil cultural history. The detailed and colourful diary entries that Anandarangam Pillai had maintained for nearly three decades, and running into a few thousand pages, have been mined by historians, literary specialists, linguists and novelists over the last century with exciting results. The historian C.S. Srinivasachari even described him as the `Pepys of French India'.

Publishing history

Ironically though, the diaries that Anandarangam Pillai maintained for the most part in Tamil were first published in extracts in French translation in 1894. Later, in the first decades of the 20th century, the Madras Government made efforts to copy the Tamil diaries and published them in English translation. Even though Tamil writers such as V.V.S. Iyer demonstrated their awareness of the existence of the diaries it was only in the late 1940s that the Tamil originals began to be published — nearly two centuries after their original composition.

The quirky publishing history does not stop here. Copies were made of the diaries in the mid-19th century, under the supervision of Edouard Ariel, while the original itself has since been lost.

Now, Orsay M. Gopalakichnane, an engineer by profession hailing from Pondicherry and settled in France, has compared the published Tamil version and English translation with the copy available in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and has come up with some startling revelations. He estimates that as much 30 per cent of the copy in the national library of France is missing in the available versions and that there are many wrong readings.

To rectify this situation, Gopalakichnane has embarked on publishing a new edition, which includes the missing portions, which he has italicised in this edition for easy identification. This is an unenviable and daunting task.

Apart from the style that Anandarangam Pillai used (modern Tamil prose had not yet developed then) teeming with French words accommodated into Tamil, the orthography of the various copyists is an editor's nightmare. Gopalakichnane has also provided glosses in parenthesis for clarity and a very comprehensive index has been placed at the end.

Three eventful years

The meticulousness of the editor should be evident to any careful reader and the volume is a great resource for the specialist. Despite the enormous effort put in by the editor, he has modestly pointed out the various shortcomings of the edition. Given the magnitude of the task — impossible to accomplish by a single hand — he has wisely chosen three eventful Tamil years, `prajorpathi' (1751-52), `angirsa' (1752-53) and `srimuga' (1753-54) for his new extended edition which he calls `v(irintha) natkurippu'. While the first of the volumes was published two years ago, this volume is the second; the third is expected to be out soon.

It is a pressing scholarly need to publish a reliable edition of the complete diaries of Anandarangam Pillai based on the exemplary model provided by Gopalakichnane.

A team of competent scholars with adequate institutional support should embark on this project, which is sure to enrich scholarship.

How to beat the shoe missile

Tue, 21 Apr 2009

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS)

Fear of the shoe is stalking Indian politicians and many of them aren't taking any chances.

While Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was seen with a net in front of a dais in Ahmedabad, his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Mayawati has increased the distance between herself and the press while speaking to reporters.

At the Congress headquarters in Delhi - where a shoe-throwing episode in the presence of Home Minister P. Chidambaram started it all, eagle-eyed security men are watching out for journalists who try to take their shoes off.

So it did not come as a surprise when new Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla took charge Tuesday, two tough looking men watched the media. When a curious journalist asked one of the burly men if he was a journalist or was simply keeping track of shoe-throwing, the answer was just a smile.

After the infamous episode of a Delhi journalist hurling a shoe at Chidambaram, shoe throwing seems have become a trend with the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate L.K. Adavni as well as Congress MP Naveen Jindal becoming victims.

Advani dubs Third Front a 'joke', Fourth Front a 'farce'

Mon, 20 Apr 2009

Bangalore, April 20 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani Monday termed the Third Front 'a joke' and the Fourth Front 'a farce'.

'I consider the Third Front a joke (mazaak) and a theory, while the Fourth Front is a farce because no one can form the next government at the centre without the BJP or the Congress,' Advani said at a poll rally late Monday evening.

Claiming that the BJP had given the country a bipolar polity by emerging as an alternative to the Congress, Advani said his 30-year-old party had ended the dominance of the grand old party (Congress) at the centre as well in the states.

'The BJP broke the hegemony and monopoly of the Congress at the centre by riding to power in 1998 under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Let the people decide which party administered the country better by comparing the performance of both the governments,' Advani told a gathering of about 10,000 people as it began to drizzle, driving many among the audience away. The intermittent drizzle had also led to a 90-minute delay in his arrival.

Addressing the restive audience at the National College grounds in English and Hindi, Advani said only the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can bring about a stable government.

'Nobody wants regional or smaller parties to form the government at the centre. I do not see the Third or the Fourth Front forming the next government, as the people want a stable government that could protect the country and ensure socio-economic development. It's only the BJP-led NDA that can bring about the change,' Advani said raising his voice.

Admitting that the BJP lost in the 2004 elections due to 'over confidence' of its leaders and cadres, Advani said he had exhorted his party's rank and file to work for victory with self-confidence.

'This time, our cadres are not over confident because they are working hard doing micro-management in every polling booth. With every passing day, people are either joining the BJP or supporting us, while the UPA is disintegrating. We are getting new allies. We are no more a north-centric party but a pan Indian party with growing presence in the west, north-east and south where the first BJP government was formed in Karnataka,' Advani reiterated.

Party's general secretary and four-time Member of Parliament H.N. Ananth Kumar is the prominent candidate from the prestigious Bangalore South constituency.

Why is Sonia silent on Karunanidhi's LTTE remark: Jayalalitha

Mon, Apr 20 09:55 PM
Madurai, April 20 (IANS)

AIADMK boss J. Jayalalitha Monday attacked Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her silence on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's open support for the outlawed Tamil Tigers, which was behind the assassination of her husband in 1991.

Speaking to CNN IBN news channel, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister asked how Sonia Gandhi could remain silent on the matter - as widow of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, as Congress party president and as United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chief.

'Why is it that Sonia Gandhi is keeping silent? Is she not the Congress president, is she not the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, is she not the chairperson of the UPA? She should come out with clear explicit answer on these questions, and she should tell the nation what she feels about it as Mr. Karunanidhi has made the statement. And she should also tell the nation what she proposes to do about it as the president of Congress and chairperson of UPA.'

Jayalalitha was reacting to Karunaidhi telling NDTV Sunday that he would 'deeply regret it (if LTTE chief Prabhakaran is killed)'. 'I will regret it. I will say it happened because of a lack of unity among the Tamil groups in Sri Lanka,' he told the channel.

Asked if he saw Prabhakaran as a terrorist, Karunanidhi said: 'No, I don't. Some people in Prabhakaran's group might be involved in terrorism. But that is not Prabhakaran's fault.'

'Prabhakaran is a good friend, and I am not a terrorist.'

However, he changed his stance Monday after his remarks triggered a political storm.

He said that the LTTE 'did not start off as a terrorist group. They began as a liberation group but it has now become a terrorist organisation', Times Now TV quoted him as saying.

Karunanidhi also insisted that the people had not forgotten Sriperumbudur - the small town near Chennai where a LTTE suicide bomber assassinated former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at an election rally in May 1991.

This message give you a idea about coconut trees age:-

Mr.Vinay Chand writes :-

I wonder if people can help me. I have for a long time not paid serious attention to claims that palms were senile or not at a particular age requiring replacement or at least cutting.

My own impression had been that there is no finite age of senility but rather at a particular age, I assumed to be 70 years, it becomes impractical to harvest coconuts from palms that are too tall. However, I keep coming across arguments that the palms need cutting at the age of 60 or even 40.

I need to look at the definition of senility in yield terms and the ag eat which it takes place. I am interested in this in general but in particular to the Pacific.

Best wishes,

Vinay Chand

Answer for Mr.Vinay Chand

Dear Vinay Chand
you raise a very critical issue concerning the productive life of the coconut palm.
There can be different reasons for a decline in yield of which aging is the primary one, but declining soil fertility, damage to the trunk or to the root system due to soil disturbance, or the onset of insect of pathogen attack can also be involved.
Ageing in the coconut takes the form of a gradual reduction in the length of the frond after about 30 years of age, a litle later if the soil fertility and year-round water supply are favourable.
As the palm ages the biomass allocated to trunk development declines as fruit development takes precedence. The amount of trunk extension between successive fronds gradually declines and this causes the base of the emerging frond to force the frond that preceded it to decline "outwards" from its position in the canopy, so that over time the full canopy of the palm has many of its older fronds drooping below a horizontal angle. Such fronds intercept less radiation so the biomass supply from photosynthesis slowly declines. The result is shorter fronds. This process, by sixty years of age, will have reduced light interception of a plantation from perhaps 80% at its peak to 40%. Yield will be proportionately decreased. Beyond 60 years it continues to decline.
I have observed palms on Taveuni Island of Fiji that were 100 years old and still had a healthy colour in the fronds, but the yield was perhaps 20 fruit. Peak yield in that environment would have been well in excess of 100 fruit per palm per year.
I and Dr Ashburner wrote a chapter for the book Handbook of Industrial Crops in 2004. The reference is as follows:

Foale, M.A. and Ashburner, R (2004) The coconut palm. Chapter 6 in: Handbook of Industrial Crops, VL Chopra and KV Peter (Eds). Indian Council for Agricultural Research, New Delhi, and Haworth Reference Press, New York

In that chapter the yield story outlined above is dealt with in more detail. I hope that it will be of use to you.
sincerely

An engineer from IIT, now a farmer

An Inspirational story …

An engineer from IIT, now a farmer

This is an inspiring story. It helps you dare to think beyond the usual..It shows how single minded dedication and focused work can help one beget the dreams. One who helps himself, the devinity reaches out to help them.Read on.
Off-beat is in. The oft beaten track, not so.
One of the most interesting themes at this year's Pan-IIT event was the session on rural transformation. IITians who have chosen an offbeat career hogged the limelight at the event. In this series, we feature some of the IITians who preferred to be different, rather than get into a corporate rat race.

The star at the event was R Madhavan, an alumnus of IIT-Madras. This is Madhavan's success story as a farmer

Passion for agriculture

I had a passion for agriculture even when I was young. I don't know how my love for agriculture started. I only know that I have always been a nature lover.
I used to have a garden even when I was a teenager. So, from a home garden, a kitchen garden, I gradually became a farmer! My mother used to be very happy with the vegetables I grew.

Studying at IIT-Madras

My family was against my ambition of becoming an agriculturist. So, I had to find a livelihood for myself.
I wrote IIT-JEE and got selected to study at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. I enjoyed studying mechanical engineering.
My intention was to transform what I study into what I love; mechanisation of farming. I felt the drudgery in farming is much more than in any other industry, and no one had looked into it.
Working for ONGC after IIT
I started my career at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). My father refused to give me any money to start farming. So I asked the officials to let me work at the offshore sites, on the rigs.
The advantage was that I could work on rigs for 14 days and then take 14 days off. I chose to work on the rigs for nine years, uninterrupted.

My first farm land

Madhavan's farm.

After 4 years, I saved enough money to buy six acres of land. I bought land at Chengelpet near Chennai.
I chose that land because the plot had access to road and water. Back in 1989, a man in a pair of trousers aroused curiosity among the farming community. That was not the image of a farmer!
Tough beginning as a farmer
I became a full fledged farmer in 1993. It was tough in the beginning. Nobody taught me how to farm. There was no guidance from the gram sevaks or the University of Agriculture.
I ran from pillar to post but couldn't find a single scientist who could help me. I burnt my fingers. My first crop was paddy and I produced 2 tonnes from the six acres of land, it was pathetic.
When I lost all my money, my father said I was stupid. I told him, it didn't matter as I was learning. It was trial and error for me for three years. Until 1997, I was only experimenting by mingling various systems.

Going to Israel to learn

In 1996, I visited Israel because I had heard that they are the best in water technology. Take the case of corn: they harvest 7 tonnes per acre whereas we produce less than a tonne.
They harvest up to 200 tonnes of tomatoes, whereas here it is 6 tonnes, in similar area of land.. I stayed in one of the kibbutz, which is a co-operative farm for 15 days.
I understood what we do is quite primitive. It was an eye opener for me. They treat each plant as an industry. A plant producing one kilo of capsicum is an industry that has 1 kilo output.
I learnt from them that we abuse water. Drip irrigation is not only for saving water but it enhances your plant productivity. We commonly practice flood irrigation where they just pump water. As per the 2005 statistics, instead of 1 litre, we use 750 litres of water.

Dr Lakshmanan, my guru

I met Dr Lakshmanan, a California-based NRI, who has been farming for the last 35 years on 50-60,000 acres of land.
He taught me farming over the last one decade. Whatever little I have learnt, it is thanks to him.
I knew a farm would give me much better returns in terms of money as well as happiness. Working for money and working for happiness are different. I work and get happiness. What more do you need?
No guidance in India
I said at one platform that we have to change the curriculum of the agricultural universities. What they teach the students is not how to farm, but how to draw loans from a bank!
What they learn cannot be transformed to reality or to the villages. The problem in the villages is not mentioned in the university. There is a wide gap and it is getting worse.

Making profits

After burning my fingers for four years, from 1997 onwards, I started making profits.
Even though it took me four years, I did not lose hope. I knew this was my path ven though I didn't have any guidance from anyone.
In those days, communication was slow. Today, I can get guidance from Dr Lakshmanan on Skype or Google Talk, or through e-mail.
I send him the picture of my problem and ask his guidance. In those days, it took time to communicate. There was no Internet or connectivity.
That was why it took me four years to learn farming. Today, I would not have taken more than six months or even less to learn the trick!

The farming cycle

I started crop rotation after 1997. In August, I start with paddy and it is harvested in December.
I plant vegetables in December itself and get the crops in February. After that, it is oil seeds like sesame and groundnut, which are drought-resistant, till May.
During May, I go on trips to learn more about the craft. I come back in June-July and start preparations on the land to get ready for August. In 1999, I bought another four acres. My target is a net income of Rs 100,000 per annum per acre. I have achieved up to Rs 50,000.

Selling the products

I sell my produce on my own. I have a jeep and bring what I produce to my house and sell from there. People know that I sell at home. I don't go through any middle man.
I take paddy to the mill, hull it and sell it on my own. In the future, I have plans to have a mill too. These days, people tell me in advance that they need rice from me. I have no problem selling my produce.

Engineering helps in farming

More than any other education, engineering helps in farming because toiling in the soil is only 20 per cent of the work. About 80 per cent of farming needs engineering skills.
Science is a must for any farming. I have developed a number of simple, farmer-friendly tools for farming areas like seeding, weeding, etc. as we don't have any tools for small farmers.
If I have 200 acres of land, I can go for food processing, etc. My next project is to lease land from the small farmers for agriculture. The village will prosper with food processing industries coming there. My yield will also be more with more land.

Abdul Kalam visits the farm

Dr Abdul Kalam visited my farm when he was the President, after hearing about what I was doing. He spent around two hours on my farm.
During his visit, he said: "We need not one, but one million Madhavans!"
If I am able to inspire or create even one entrepreneur, I will be very happy, because that is what Dr Kalam wished me to do.

Experimental farming

Every acre of my land has ten cents of experimental farming. I have done this for the last 15 years..
This is a part of my research and development. Some of it may fail, but even if I succeed at one thing, that is enough for me.

Entrepreneurship in the village

I feel that the number of people engaged only in farming should come down. Instead of ten people, there should only be two people. I am not saying the eight should go jobless.
What we should do is, create employment in the villages based on other agro activities like value addition, processing, etc.
We can go for mechanisation in large areas so that the cost per acre goes down.. In India, the cost per every meal is very high. So, my next concern is, how do you make it cheap.
In America, the unskilled working for one hour can earn three meals a day. Here, in the rural areas, even if they work for one day, they can't get one meal a day. How do you bring down the cost? By producing more food. So, my intention is to make more food.

Food insecurity in India

The United Nations says 65 per cent of the world population suffers from food deficiency, and India ranks first in the list.
About 49 per cent of our children are undernourished. This means our future generation will be affected.
If we are not going to give attention to this area, we are in for real trouble. Food insecurity is more threatening than an atom bomb!

ENNAMA KANNU, SOWKIYAMA? Sathyaraj

‘I’m like the kid in TZP’
...says Sathyaraj, who, CT finds, is still young at heart and his penchant for the unusual is still evident
SRINIVASA RAMANUJAM Times News Network

On a sunny day in 1976, a lanky lad called Rangaraj hurriedly left his home in Coimbatore with minimal luggage and a letter on him. He hopped over to the post box bang opposite his house and dropped the letter that said, “I am leaving home to go to Chennai and join the movies.” It was addressed to his mother, who — along with his other family members — had forbidden him from venturing anywhere near Kodambakkam.
Thirty three years later, Rangarajan aka actor Sathyaraj still remembers that day clearly. “I should have just dropped the letter off at the post box in my house,” he reminisces, “Why did I have to waste the stamp charge that was levied on it?”
Known for his uncanny dialogue delivery and his ability to poke fun at things that seem normal otherwise, the actor is now trying to learn new languages! He has his hands full with a Telugu movie (in which he co-stars with Trisha and Gopichand), a Malayalam film and a couple of Tamil films. Was venturing into other woods a conscious decision? “I’ve wanted to act in other languages as well, and the right chance came along some time ago. When I started off on the Telugu film, I clearly told them that I was like the kid in Taare Zameen Par! And, the director immediately told me that while the TZP kid had only one Aamir Khan, I’ll have everyone in the crew to assist him!”
Once he decided that he was going to woods closer home, his first concern was that he had to use prompting devices — something he’d never done in Kollywood. “That was when I chanced upon a book written by Marlon Brando. He had, in fact, used prompting most of the time! When an actor of his calibre can use it and perform, I had no second thoughts.” The last few years have been very important for the versatile actor. If Onbathu Roobai Nottu brought out his acting talent, Kannamoochi Enada proved that his special knack of delivering oneliners and jokes was still intact. “I didn’t want to play the socalled hero character,” he states matter-of-factly, “I couldn’t convert myself into a 25-year-old on
screen. Nor was I interested in playing runof-the-mill hero dad roles. I wanted to do movies for directors who could cast me in powerful roles.”
The offbeat and the unusual have often attracted the lanky actor, who was cast in memorable villain roles in the 1980s. “At a film festival that showcased my film Periyar, the audience found it tough to actually recognise me as the person they saw on screen!” Some of them came up to him and hugged him. “I’d never got that kind of a reception and was truly thrilled,” he says. His dialogues on screen — like ‘En characteraye purinjukamatengara’ or ‘Ennama Kannu’ — have always evinced interest among audiences, primarily due to the way in which they were delivered. “My directors have used me perfectly and given me such opportunities,” he says, “Interestingly, the famous Ennama Kannu… dialogue has undergone a journey. It became a song, and soon, a film was made with it as the title!”
Sathyaraj is on the lookout for a historical subject, something that he describes as his “dream project.” “There’s something about those projects, you know,” he starts off with delight, “When ten cars fly on screen, there’s a certain grandeur about it but it’ll never match the charm that a historical subject has.”
T H E 8 0 S E F F E C T
Sathyaraj was recently a guest at Radio Mirchi’s Rewind, a programme to reminisce the cinema industry two decades ago. “There was a sea change in the 1980s, in which the two-hero pattern was slightly broken,” he said, “Due to those changes in Kollywood, almost everybody could aspire to become a hero and that’s probably why I made it too!

ISRO Launched first Radar Imaging Satellite

CHENNAI:19/4/09
Aiming to enhance India's defence surveillance capabilities, ISRO is all set to launch its first Radar Imaging Satellite
(RISAT) and
micro educational satellite, ANUSAT, from its spaceport in Sriharikota at 6.45 AM on Monday.

According to ISRO, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C12 (PSLV-C12) would carry the 300-kg RISAT-2 and 40-kg micro satellite, ANUSAT, built by Anna University.

RISAT, to be launched from Sriharikota on the east coast of Andhra Pradesh, some 80 km north from here, has all weather capability to take images of the Earth and would also be beneficial in mapping and managing natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, besides amplifying defence surveillance capabilities of the nation.

As per specifications, RISAT is different from previous remote sensing satellites as it uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), equipped with many antennas to receive signals that are processed into high-resolution pictures.

The SAR, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, gives RISAT defence capabilities.

Narain Karthikeyan Gushs on Nano

The world’s cheapest car Nano has thrilled the Indian masses and also India’s first F1 circuit driver Narain Karthikeyan. He is proud of Tata Motors for launching the small car saying that “Nano is a reflection of Indian innovation and its impact on the world.”

Narain can’t stop praising Tata Nano after having driven it several times. He was among the select few to have test driven India’s small car extensively. Narain testifies that Tata Motors claims for superior quality and performance are true. The horses are ample for a 623 cc car. It is not known if he has booked for the first phase of 1Lakh Nano cars to be allotted in July.

Narain Karthikeyan has been quick to put to rest the fears of several people on Nano’s one on road performance. Based on his experience of driving the car he said that it is marvelous piece of engineering. It is lighter than Maruti 800 and delivers high level comfort that will surprise its occupants. He believes that the Nano rush is real and is worth much more than the Rs One Lakh price tag offered by Tata Motors. He re-affirms that Tata Nano is a top quality product.

Clearly, he has been floored by Nano’s charms, despite his F1 experience. This clearly highlights that Nano is more than a cheap car.

BJP forms new front in Tamil Nadu

Sat, Apr 18 09:02 PM

Chennai, April 18 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday formed a front in Tamil Nadu with the Janata Party, Nadalum Makkal Katchi (NMK) and All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) headed by film stars Karthick and Sarath Kumar for Lok Sabha polls.

Disclosing this at a press conference here, senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said 'the Janata Party, headed by Subramanian Swamy, would not contest any seats, but extend full support and work for the front in Tamil Nadu.'

As per the seat-sharing agreement, AISMK will contest in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Namakkal and Tirupur, NMK would fight the Virudhunagar and Theni seats, and BJP will contest in 13 constituencies.

Denying reports of BJP approaching the AIADMK-led front for a post-poll alliance, Naidu said: 'We are not approaching anybody right now' and expressed the hope that 'the BJP-led front would put up a good show in the elections'.

On the Sri Lankan ethnic issue, Naidu said the central government does not have any action plan to solve the problems of Tamils in the island nation.

The party had mixed results in the past decade as it tied up with the DMK and AIADMK. Aligning with the AIADMK in 1998, BJP had won three of the five seats it contested and then won four out of six that they contested with the support of the DMK front.

Hoping to replicate its earlier success, the BJP again aligned with the AIADMK in 2004 but drew bank losing all six seats that they contested.

The party dropped its plan of joining the AIADMK this time since J. Jayalalithaa joined hands with the Left parties.

Tamil Nadu goes to polls for all its 39 Lok Sabha seats May 13.

A South Indian group of Brahmins in Tamil Nadu called Sholiyar or Chozhiyar, claim that Chanakya was one of them.

Chanakya (Sanskrit: चाणक्य Cāṇakya) (c. 350-283 BCE) was an adviser and a prime minister[1] to the first Maurya Emperor Chandragupta (c. 340-293 BCE), and architect of his rise to power. Kautilya and Vishnugupta, the names by which the ancient Indian political treatise called the Arthaśāstra identifies its author, are traditionally identified with Chanakya.[2] Chanakya has been considered as the pioneer of the field of economics, preceding Ibn Khaldun in writing about it by about a millennium and a half.[3][4][5][6] He is known as "The Indian Machiavelli" in the Western world.[7] Chanakya was a professor at Takshashila University and is widely believed to be responsible for the creation of Mauryan empire, the first of its kind on the Indian subcontinent.

Identity

He is generally called Chanakya[8] but, in his capacity as author of the Arthaśhāstra, is generally referred to as Kautilya which means kautil neeti. He was the master of shrewd act of diplomacy. He believed in four ways Enticement , Sowing dession , Punishment or war .[9] The Arthaśhāstra identifies its author by the name Kautilya,[2] except for one verse which refers to him by the name Vishnugupta.[10] One of the earliest Sanskrit literature to explicitly identify Chanakya with Vishnugupta was Vishnu Sarma's Panchatantra in the 3rd century BC.[11]

K.C. Ojha puts forward the view that the traditional identification of Vishnugupta with Kautilya was caused by a confusion of editor and originator and suggests that Vishnugupta was a redactor of the original work of Kautilya.[2] Thomas Burrow goes even further and suggests that Chanakya and Kautilya may have been two different people.[12]

Works

Two books are attributed to Chanakya: Arthashastra and Nitishastra which is also known as Chanakya Niti. The Arthashastra discusses monetary and fiscal policies, welfare, international relations, and war strategies in detail. Nitishastra is a treatise on the ideal way of life, and shows Chanakya's in depth study of the Indian way of life.

Legend
Silver punch mark coin of the Mauryan empire, with symbols of wheel and elephant. 3rd century BCE.

Thomas R. Trautmann lists the following elements as common to different forms of the Chanakya legend[13]:

* Chanakya was born with a complete set of teeth, a sign that he would become king, which is inappropriate for a Brahmin like Chanakya. Chāṇakya's teeth were therefore broken and it was prophesied that he will rule through another.
* The Nanda King throws Chānakya out of his court, prompting Chānakya to swear revenge.
* Chānakya searches for one worthy for him to rule through. Chānakya encounters a young Chandragupta Maurya who is a born leader even as a child.
* Chānakya's initial attempt to overthrow Nanda fails, whereupon he comes across a mother scolding her child for burning himself by eating from the middle of a bun or bowl of porridge rather than the cooler edge. Chāṇakya realizes his initial strategic error and, instead of attacking the heart of Nanda territory, slowly chips away at its edges.
* Chānakya changed his alliance with the mountain king Parvata due to his obstinacy and non-adherence to the principles of the treaty as agreed.
* Chānakya enlists the services of a fanatical weaver to rid the kingdom of rebels.
* Chānakya adds poison to the food eaten by Chandragupta Maurya, now king, in order to make him immune. Unaware, Chandragupta feeds some of his food to his queen, who is in her ninth month of pregnancy. In order to save the heir to the throne, Chānakya cuts the queen open and extracts the fetus, who is named Bindusāra because he was touched by a drop (bindu) of blood of poison.
* Chānakya's political rivalry with Subandhu leads to his death.

Chanakya was an intelligent saint. Once, it is said that Mauryan forces had to hide in a cave. There was no food. Soldiers were starving. They could not come out of the cave either, as there was a threat to their lives. Chanakya saw an ant taking a grain of rice, Whereas, there was no sign of food or grain anywhere. Moreover, the rice grain was cooked. He ordered the soldiers to search and they found that their enemies had been dining under the cave. Somewhat like, at the ground floor. As soon as they saw this, they escaped and thus were saved.

Jain version

According to Jaina accounts[14] Chānakya was born in the village of Caṇaka in the Golla district to Caṇin and Caṇeśvarī, a Maga Brahmin couple[13].

Death of Chanakya

Chanakya lived to a ripe old age and died around 283 BC and was cremated by his grandson/disciple Radhagupta who succeeded Rakshasa Katyayan (great-grand son of Prabuddha Katyayan, who attained Nirvana during the same period as Gautam Budhha) as Prime Minister of the Maurya Empire and was instrumental in backing Ashoka to the throne. There were three non-traditional belief paths in society those days, Jaina, Buddhist and Ajivaka. Ajivaka practising Chanakya brought about the downfall of the Jaina Nandas and their coterie of Jaina ministers. (Chanakya 's uncle was Jain, too, and a group of Jains backed Chanakya in his political machinations). Later on, Chandragupta Maurya took Jainism on abdicating his throne which passed to his Son Bindusara who was an Ajivaka. Even Ashoka was practising Ajivaka who before accession to throne became Buddhist. Bindusara was born before his father ever became Emperor so the below legend is definitely not true. Ashoka's daughter was married in 265 BC and his son Kunala was 18 years of age in 269 BC which means that even the princes married early, Ashoka was born 310 BC and Bindusara around 330 BC. Bindusara means one who encompasses all that is need to be known.

Later on, Ajivikism which was the official religion of the empire since the Kalinga War (261 BC) and for 14 years afterwards, declined and merged into traditional Hinduism. What has been left are a mish mash of contradictory Buddhist and Jaina legends which are even rejected by Sinhalese chronicles.

According to a legend which is a later jaina invention, while Chanakya served as the Prime Minister of Chandragupta Maurya, he started adding small amounts of poison in Chandragupta's food so that he would get used to it. The aim of this was to prevent the Emperor from being poisoned by enemies. One day the queen, Durdha, shared the food with the Emperor while she was pregnant. Since she was not used to eating poisoned food, she died. Chanakya decided that the baby should not die; hence he cut open the belly of the queen and took out the baby. A drop (bindu in Sanskrit) of poison had passed to the baby's head, and hence Chanakya named him Bindusara. Bindusara would go on to become a great king and to father the greatest Mauryan Emperor since Chandragupta - Asoka.

When Bindusara became a youth, Chandragupta gave up the throne and followed the Jain saint Bhadrabahu to present day Karnataka and settled in a place known as Shravana Belagola. He lived as an ascetic for some years and died of voluntary starvation according to Jain tradition.

Chanakya meanwhile stayed as the Prime Minister of Bindusara. Bindusara also had a minister named Subandhu who did not like Chanakya. One day he told Bindusara that Chanakya was responsible for the murder of his mother. Bindusara asked the nurses who confirmed this story and he became very angry with Chanakya.

It is said that Chanakya, on hearing that the Emperor was angry with him, thought that anyway he was at the end of his life. He donated all his wealth to the poor, widows and orphans and sat on a dung heap, prepared to die by total abstinence from food and drink. Bindusara meanwhile heard the full story of his birth from the nurses and rushed to beg forgiveness of Chanakya. But Chanakya would not relent. Bindusara went back and vent his fury on Subandhu, who asked for time to beg for forgiveness from Chanakya.

Subandhu, who still hated Chanakya, wanted to make sure that Chanakya did not return to the city. So he arranged for a ceremony of respect, but unnoticed by anyone, slipped a smoldering charcoal ember inside the dung heap. Aided by the wind, the dung heap swiftly caught fire, and the man behind the Mauryan Empire and the author of Arthashastra was burned to death.

His main philosophy was "A debt should be paid off till the last penny; An enemy should be destroyed without a trace". Ironically, Subandhu followed his main philosophy and destroyed him without a trace.

Pali version

Chanakya is a Brahmin from Takshila[13].

Other versions

The classical Sanskrit play by Vishakhadatta, Mudrarakshasa, is one popular source of Chankaya lore. (The play has been dated between 4th and 9th century CE).

A South Indian group of Brahmins in Tamil Nadu called Sholiyar or Chozhiyar, claim that Chanakya was one of them. Though this may sound very improbable, considering the vast distance between present day Tamilnadu in the south and Magadha in Bihar, it finds curious echos in the Abhidhānchintāmani, where Hemachandra claims that Chankya was a Dramila[15]("Dramila" is believed to be the root of the word "Dravida" by some scholars).

There is also a claim that Chanakya belonged to the Brahmin group from the present day Kerala. In true Hindu tradition he is said to have persuaded King Chandragupta Maurya to forsake his throne and to join him in moving to the last phase of one's life viz. Sanyasa. Accordingly, he took the King along with him to South India where both of them carried prolonged meditation and finally achieved Moksha.

Kautilya was educated at Taxila or Takshashila,[16] in present day Pakistan. The new states (in present-day Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) by the northern high road of commerce along the base of the Himalayas maintained contact with Takshasilâ and at the eastern end of the northern high road (uttarapatha) was the kingdom of Magadha with its capital city, Pataliputra, now known as Patna. Chanakya's life was connected to these two cities, Pataliputra and Taxila.

In his early years he was tutored extensively in the Vedas - Chanakya memorized them completely at a very early age.[verification needed] He was also taught mathematics, geography and science along with religion.[verification needed] Later he travelled to Taxila, where he became a teacher of politics.[verification needed] Chanakya taught subjects using the best of practical knowledge acquired by the teachers. The age of entering the University was sixteen. The branches of study most sought after around India at that time ranged from law, medicine, warfare and other disciplines. Two of his more famous students were Bhadrabhatta and Purushdutta.[verification needed]

Political turmoil in Western India at that time caused by Greek invasion forced Chanakya to leave the University environment for the city of Pataliputra (presently known as Patna, in the state of Bihar, India), which was ruled by the Nanda king Dhanananda. Although Chanakya initially prospered in his relations with the ruler, being a blunt person he was soon disliked by Dhanananda. This ended with Chanakya being removed from an official position he enjoyed.

According to the Kashmiri version of his legend, Chāṇakya a thorn had pricked his foot, he uprooted the tree and poured buttermilk in the roots . [17]

Furthermore, this throws the balance of evidence in favor of the view that the second name was originally spelt Kauṭalya and that after the compiler of the Arth. came to be identified with the Mauryan minister it was altered to Kautilya (as it appears in Āryaśūra, Viśākhadatta and Bāna) for the sake of the pun. We must then assume that the later spelling subsequently replaced the earlier in the gotra lists and elsewhere.'
